Easter Treats!

Want to feel mildly terrible about what you ate today to celebrate the resurrection of Our Risen Lord?  Today we're going through some popular Easter treats to see if they were really worth it.  The exercise needed to burn the calories off is based on a 135 pound woman.  And hey, I'm one of those things!

Cadbury Creme Egg: 150 calories (1 egg)
Amy and I saw Jeneane Garofalo's standup at the Warner Theater once (it was the 90's, so it was an obvious thing to do at the time), and the guy that was her opener addressed the deliciousness that is the Cadbury Creme Egg.  He said that he'd like to be trapped in a Ford Focus-sized Cadbury egg and have to eat his way out.  Seems reasonable.
Nutrition Damage: 6 grams of fat and 20 grams of sugar into one little egg
How to burn it off: a 30-minute game of doubles tennis
Verdict: I doubt I could even hit a tennis ball with a racket if I tried.  I think I'll pass.

Original Peeps: 140 calories (5 yellow chicks)
A few of you know that I love Peeps--for making dioramas.  Alas, my entry "E-Peepa," which represented the life of Eva Peron in marshmallow bunny form, was not selected as a finalist in their annual Peep Show contest.

Nutrition Damage: The good news here is that Peeps have no fat content —but five of the little guys (a serving size) have 34 grams of sugar (ouch).
How to burn it off:  20 minutes of moderate rowing
Verdict: Does anyone eat more than 1 peep before their mouth turns inside out?  I'm gonna give these a no as well.

Russell Stover Marshmallow Egg: 110 calories (1 egg)
Whenever I go into the drugstore to pick up my allergy prescriptions, I get one of these as my consolation prize for having allergies.  It's the small things, people.
Nutrition Damage: Again, 3 grams of fat and 14 grams of sugar.
How to burn it off:  30 minutes of beginner Pilates
Verdict: Yessssss!  I will do ALL THE PILATES to eat as many of these as possible.

Cadbury Mini Eggs: 190 calories (12 pieces)
Malt + chocolate?  Sign me up!
Nutrition DamageA dozen pieces packs in 8 grams of fat and 27 grams of sugar.
How to burn it off:  A 30-minute run/walk.
Verdict: These things are so delicious.  And I just went on a 30 minute run/walk, that was (let's be honest) all walk.  Neeeed mini eggs!

Sweetarts Chicks, Ducks and Bunnies: 50 calories (10 pieces)
I mean, really, why even both with these when you can just eat a bunch of children's  vitamins?
Nutrition Damage: 12 grams of sugar and no fat
How to burn it off:  About 30 minutes of gentle yoga burns nearly 80 calories, so if you have a few more pieces than the serving size, you're still good.
Verdict: I like yoga!  But really, just go for the vitamins.

M&Ms Bunny Mix: 210 calories (1.5 ounces or about 1/4 cup)
Scientific fact: M&Ms taste better in pastel colors.  Other scientific fact: M&Ms are the best candy ever.
Nutrition DamageA small handful has 9 grams of fat and 26 grams of sugar,
How to burn it off:  A 25-minute run at a 12-minute mile pace.
Verdict: Well, I'm not supposed to run given my hip bursitis and asthma, but for you, M&Ms--anything.

Snickers Egg: 160 calories (1 egg)
I don't really like Snickers.  But since I'm sure some of my fabulous readers do, I'm leaving the info here.  I'm a benevolent blogger.
Nutrition Damage: 9 grams of fat and 17 grams of sugar
How to burn it off:  15 minutes of moderate jumping rope
Verdict: Even if I liked Snickers, there's no way I'm going to moderately jump rope for 15 minutes.  Ever done a Jillian Michaels workout video where you had to moderately jump rope for 90 seconds?  Did you want to die afterwards?  I THOUGHT SO.

Reese's Peanut Butter Egg: 170 calories (1 egg)
You've heard me say it before: I like chocolate, I like peanut butter, I don't like them together.  Again, as a service to all of the normal people reading this, I'm leaving the info for Reese's Peanut Butter Eggs in here.
Nutrition Damage: 10 grams of fat and 16 grams of sugar
How to burn it off:  35 minutes of moderate aerobics
Verdict: Bwah ha ha ha ha ha!  NOPE.

Russell Stover Solid Milk Chocolate Bunny: 240 calories (1 bunny)
Does anyone ever eat the chocolate bunny in their Easter basket?  Or do they just eat the ears off, then wait for it to get that weird chocolate film, then throw it away in June.  Yep, I thought so.
Nutrition Damage: 14 grams of fat and 23 grams of sugar
How to burn it off:  30 minute moderate bike ride
Verdict: Why even bother when you could eat all the other stuff?  But I'm up for a bike ride!

And finally, I'm doing the March for Babies, which is a 4 mile walk to benefit the March of Dimes.  (Hmmm, how many M&Ms can I have beforehand?)  Please, please, please consider a $5-$10 donation.  I have 7 days left and $65 more to raise.

Freezer Meal #2 - Maple Pork Tenderloin with Apples

This is the second part of my foray in to freezer meals - the first part can be found here  for Cheesy Shells and Italian Sausage. Today we're making a pork and apples recipe adapted from The Pampered Chef.  I love this one--it's so easy to assemble in advance, most of the ingredients you likely already have, and it couldn't be easier to fix the day you want to eat it (dump stuff in pan, bake). So yummy.  And pretty. Maple Pork Tenderloin with Apples For this you'll need the ingredients below.  You probably have the oil, vinegar, garlic, brown sugar, mustard, and bags in your pantry!  You can also easily divide this recipe if you usually only cook for 2-3 people at a time (that's what I do when I make it). 2 pork tenderloins , about 2 pounds total - they can be expensive, so pick these up on sale 3 apples - I prefer honeycrisp but use what you like, or take one of these suggestions 1 small red onion 1/4 cup canola oil 1 clove garlic , pressed o

New Year, Old Me

And, after a brief 5 year hiatus, we're back! For those of you who are new here, for a number of years I wrote a blog featuring an assortment of things I found interesting: the British Royal Family, sarcastic hot takes on award show fashion, travel, and (the reason I started it) to help me keep stay on track with eating healthier food. Recently, one of my doctors suggested that I start the blog back up and I thought it was a good idea for a few reasons: chief among them to help with some health goals, plus I'd like to use it as a way to stay connected with some colleagues that departed at work. By way of an understatement, 2023 was a smidge rough.   My dad got really sick in April, and after that, it was a slalom of the American healthcare system / in-home healthcare / nursing facilities / ambiguous loss & living grief .  Meanwhile, back at the ranch, the company I work for turned 24 and, well, sometimes 24 year old companies behave like 24 year old humans.  They're fun

Kate Middleton, Goofball

My new favorite K-Middy gif came out today.  She and William went for a walk during their day off in Australia, and she totally did this: Big Willy and Babykins (their nicknames for each other) have talked about Kate's sense of humor before in interviews.  Apparently she's funny and sarcastic--now we're more than just hair soul mates!  Below are some of my favorite non-posed Kate pics. They're probably watching horses.  So British of them. This is at the Olympics.  She seems concerned. I'd also like to point out that I'm jealous of how good her ponytail looks. It sounds like she's saying "OMG no way!" Man, I hope that's what she's talking about with the fancy church people at the Queen's Diamond Jubilee service. Again, I suspect ponies are involved here. If you watch interviews with her (and I do) she makes this face all the time.  I LOVE IT. Celebrities: they're just like us!  They hide behind their
