Temporary Hiatus

Don't worry--I haven't given up.  It's just that it is pretty hard to eat well and exercise when you're sick.  I have been trying to keep it relatively healthy: homemade brown rice soup with veggies, wheat crackers, bananas, apples.  But I'm just generally not in the mood for milk, or salads, or the exercise bike.  And I think it's perfectly okay to eat donuts and ice cream when you're under the weather.  So we'll resume when I'm back up to speed. In the meantime, two things.  First, I'm only $60 away from being the top fundraiser on my team for the Alzheimer's Walk .  There's a little healthy competition between me and my coworker in Learning & Development....(shocking, I know).  The walk is this weekend, so if you want to donate, now is the time!  Also, I'm terribly behind on thank you notes, but I really appreciate all of you that have given!  I promise there is a germy note of gratitude in your future. Second, please enjoy

Day 89

For breakfast, I had Indecision.  In the team room, there are 100-calorie English muffins, individual oatmeal cups, breakfast bars, etc.  But I didn't have any jelly for the muffins, the oatmeal was 300 calories, and the breakfast bars looked more like pseudo dessert.  So I unhappily ate an orange.   Total: 0 points Lunch was the September birthday celebration at work, so I had a salad with two teaspoons of olive oil, a slice of veggie pizza without the crust, a cup of strawberries (I cut each one in to fourths and was mocked by Coworker Inez who is always right about everything so I don't know why I don't ask her advice more often), and two bites of cake.  Plus a cup of water.   Total: 9 points Snacky time was thirteen chocolate chips, two pretzel rods, and a cup of water.  Plus Dayquil.   Total: 2 points We were supposed to go out to the farm where we're getting married for dinner, but I felt t-e-r-r-i-b-l-e so we ordered from Rangolia, because there's no

Day 88

Breakfast was fruity--a banana, a tangerine, two cups of water, and a disgusting blueberry Greek yogurt.  Sorry, Oikos fruit on the bottom, but you are terrible.   Total: 3 points Then came the Dayquil (please be allergies and not something else!).  And with the Dayquil came two crackers to get the icky medicine taste out of my mouth.  Total: 1 point Grumpy Bear says "Dayquil is gross!" Lunch was catered, and I successfully avoided cookies, cupcakes, potato chips, pasta salad, and bread.  (Can I get an Amen?)  So I had the roast beef off of a sandwich, and a lettuce and tomato salad with two teaspoons of olive oil from the bottle that I keep in my desk.  And two more cups of water.   Total: 5 points Blessed are those who avoid the carbs and desserts. Next came exercise!  Twenty minutes on the treadmill! And then I needed M&Ms.  First, because I was crashing at work.  Second because my mouth tasted like allergies.  So I had a bag of them and two pretzel stick

Day 87

Okay first, People of Zumba, we need to have a discussion.  Chris got me Zumba 2 for wii because everyone tells me how awesome Zumba is.  I have two problems with it: first, the wii mote isn't registering what I'm doing (I'm terrible, but I'm not 0% accurate terrible), and second, all the songs make me want chips and salsa. The zumba zombies amble off in search of tacos. I'm guessing that maybe it is one of those things that I'd be better at doing if I took a class?  I feel that way about yoga videos.  ANYWAY, I did about 10 minutes of Zumba, then tried to talk myself out of going to Taco Bell. But before that... Sunday breakfast was water and television watching.   Total: 0 points Lunch was three boneless buffalo wings (such restraint!), a teaspoon of blue cheese (MAJOR restraint!), celery, two cups of milk, and a cup of grapes.   Total: 11 points Dinner was five pieces of tuna sushi made with brown rice and two cups of water.  Also a salad wit

Special to The Shame Squad: Celebrities in Ugly Dresses

Oh Jena Malone, it's so nice that you took a beginner's sewing class right before the Emmys.  But maybe you shouldn't have made your dress. Kiernan Shipka is going to the 9th grade dance.  Awwww. Emily VanCamp is so in to recycling that she made her dress out of rags that she used to wash the car!  (Jena Malone sewed it.) Elisabeth Moss couldn't find her dress and was forced to make a frock out of her hotel curtains. No Lena Dunham.  Just no. Julianna Moore in "Austin Powers meets Elizabethan England." Lena Headey, if you have a stylist, you should fire them.  If you won't, I will.  Attention Lena Headey's stylist!  You are fired! Oh Christine Baranski, the 80's called and they want that dress back. And the winner(?) of tonight's terrible dress contest?  Why, Mayim Bialik?  Why?!  Blossom, you disappoint me.

Day 86

Sunday is weigh-in day.  Let's talk about last week in terms of a science experiment, shall we? My purpose  was to find out what happens if you don't exercise and then give up at the end of the week and eat french fries.  My research shows that french fries have lots of calories and sodium.  My hypothesis  was that I won't lose any weight.   Experimenting was fun--I drank wine, ate chocolate, and then went on a carb binge.  I analyzed my weight this morning and it was exactly the same as last week.  In conclusion, I wish I wouldn't have done that.  Still 21.8 pounds go to.  My goal for this week is to break in to the 19ish pounds to go. Anyway, let's recap Saturday.  For breakfast, I had sleeping.  Magical, wonderful sleeping.  Left to my own devices, I usually sleep until about 8:30.  But the more stressful work gets, the greater my ability to sleep in becomes. Soooooo, I got up a little after 11.   Total: 0 points Breakfas....zzzzzzzzzzzz. The lazines

Day 84 and 85

On Thursday, I knew dinner was going to be big, so breakfast was an orange and four cups of water.  AND ANOTHER LONG MEETING.   Total: 0 points Lunch was two ounces of chicken, a cup of roasted veggies, a half cup of white beans, and an apple. Plus two more cups of water.  AND ANOTHER MEETING.  Total: 5 points Sometimes I feel like Brad Pitt in Ocean's 11 because I'm ALWAYS EATING. Snack was two pretzel rods and twelve chocolate chips.  Another two cups of water.  AND ANOTHER MEETING.  Total: 2 points Dinner was a planned disaster that included two glasses of wine, two glasses of tea, six small slices of baguette, an ounce and a half of cheese fondue, a tomato and cucumber salad, a duck confit salad, and a chocolate ball.   Total: Um, 30 points? Mmmm, delicious chocolate balls. Liquids:  10 /6 Dairy: 1 /2  Vitamin:   1 /1 Healthy Oil:  0 /2 Fruits/Veggies: 8 /5 Protein:  4 /2 Whole Grains:  yes--pretzels Exercise:   nope Total :  26 / 26 points     Weekly Points

Day 83

When we last left off at The Shame Squad, I had promised to do the things listed below.  Here's how it went: Eat an alternate lunch if necessary -The choices were sandwiches, salad, chips and cake.  I got a sandwich and threw away the bread so I could eat the turkey.  Then I brought my own healthy oil to add to the salad.  And I did have three bites of cake.   And an orange.   Total: 7 points Cross my fingers about dinner with friends -We ordered Thai food, so I got to pick my own!  I had something called "Wild-Dish," which is chicken with thai chili paste, bamboo shoots, thai eggplant and basil.  I also had two cups of milk, which Jason told me was something "not generally requested by [their] adult visitors."  Maybe that's why he served it to me in a blue plastic cup.  Also brown rice and grapes.  And imaginary ice cream that Robin and Jason's son made me.   Total: 15 points Exercise -I did 10 minutes of yoga at work, 20 minutes of yoga at home, an

Days 81 and 82

So I think I know what it feels like to be incarcerated.  Except that I think most inmates are two per cell, not eight.  Needless to say, I've spent two more days trapped in The Room, with seven of my closest coworkers. Send... help... First, the good news: I got to order lunch both days, so one day was kebabs and salad, and the other was wraps and smoothies.  Also, we have been taking turns bringing breakfast, and everyone else is healthy!  The bad news?  There is too much of a good thing.  Case in point: hummus and pita. So unassuming, so calorie-riffic. So Monday was... Breakfast-six ounces of vanilla yogurt and fruit.  Total: 3 points Lunch-a veggie kabob, a chicken kabob, salad with olive oil, white beans, rice, and a ridiculous amount of hummus and pita.   Total: 18 points (I know.  I KNOW.) Dinner-Cowboy Stew a la Don, salad, and crackers.   Total: 14 points Tuesday included: Breakfast-six ounces of vanilla yogurt and fruit again.   Total: 3 po

Day 80

I was seriously awesome in the kitchen yesterday. Kitchen bad-assery! I slept in, and then got up and made the patties for spicy black bean burgers.  Then I decided that I wasn't really feelin' those (but no worries, they freeze).  So I decided to to whip up some Baked Cheddar Broccoli Rice Cups .  You'll notice that these aren't super healthy in the recipe, so I changed it by: Cooking 1 cup of brown rice in 2 1/2 cups of fat free chicken broth for 45 minutes instead of using instant white rice Adding the 10 oz of thawed and squeezed broccoli, as directed Using 3/4 cup of cheddar cheese, but the kind made with 2% milk Adding a quarter cup of fat-free sour cream mixed with a teaspoon of dry ranch seasoning instead of ranch dressing Using only one egg instead of two Adding salt and pepper to taste, as directed Spoon in to twelve muffin cups that have been sprayed with cooking spray.  Top each "muffin" with the remaining 1/4 cup of cheese.  Bake at

Day 79

Weigh in day!  I only lost .4 last week, but hey, I'll take it. Now there's 21.8 pounds to go.  I think there were a few things that didn't go so well last week, namely: I only exercised two days. I think the points might have been wrong on some things (namely the ham sandwiches from The Cheese Shop--but I'm out of those, so that solves that).  I'm also a little worried about the sushi being more points than listed, but I've figured it out a couple of ways and keep coming up with the same number. Too much salt, even for me. I think I need to eat more veggies and less fruit, since fruit is basically sugar. So the plan this week is more exercise, less salt, and trying to choose veggies over fruit when I can. Less of this. Okay, so on to Saturday.  The day started off with water and a lack of desire to eat food.  I was still full from the night before.  So breakfast was four glasses of water.   Total: 0 points Breakfast. It's always good to e
