Day 212

Ever since I had delicious poached eggs at Eggspectation this month, I've been wanting some.  So I bought an egg poacher, and did more internet research than I care to admit.  The internet told me to cook them 2-4 minutes, or 4-6 minutes, or until a magic unicorn appeared in the east.  I was supposed to add butter to the cups and definitely not water, or water and definitely not butter, or vinegar, and then make a whirlpool while reciting the books of the Bible, and... really, people, this shouldn't be that complicated. Hell if I know. Anyway, I had moderate success this morning--the yolk and the edges were a little overcooked.  But I'll keep trying.  Suggestions are welcome. Maybe they'll look like this next time. Breakfast was most  of a poached egg, a piece of toast with butter/canola spread, and some leftover hash brown casserole, plus two cups of water.   Total: 8 points Then I did arms and abs.  This is how I feel when I exercise...

Day 211

Weigh in day, and I lost 2.2 pounds.  I'm magic, right?!  Alas, turns out that drinking water after eating straight up sodium for a month takes weight off fast.  Too bad it only works once...  At any rate, we'll give it a K-Middy. Brunch was belated Christmas with my parents plus Amy & Her Chris.  Chris and I brought the potato casserole (made with fat-free sour cream, 2% cheese, skim milk, reduced fat soup, and LOVE) and  asparagus with dijon vinaigrette , which was a recipe from Skinnytaste that turned out delicious. I cuss, you cuss, we all cuss for asparagus! Amy brought bacon and champagne, and my parents did eggs, fruit, and toast.  Since 5 out of 6 of us are trying to lose weight, it was yummy and healthy.  Yay!  I had some of everything, plus two cups of coffee and a cup of water for a total of 17 points .  Totally worth it. Exercise was a 25 minute walk outside.  Yay, exercise!  Outside!  Plus tw...

Days 209 & 210

Remember that time that I decided I'd lose weight between Thanksgiving and Christmas?  Yeah, I must have been drunk when I came up with that gem. "I'll totally lose weight over the holidays!  It'll be easy!" So I'm back, and there's two more pounds of me to love!  (UUUGH.)  So now I have 16 pounds to lose before the honeymoon, which is in 64 days. Must lose weight so I can eat tropical fat and carbs! Fortunately(?) I was feeling really blah and  was full from Christmas, so breakfast and lunch was 3 cups of water, a cup of coffee with sugar, a cup of veggies (snap peas, carrots, tomatoes) with a little bit of yogurt dip and 2 pieces of reduced fat American cheese.   Total: 4 points For dinner, Chris made filet mignon with a blue cheese crust and port wine reduction.  Sound good?  IT WAS.  I cut my steak and my baked potato in half, and had some fat-free sour cream and canola spread on the potatoes.  I finished all my green veg...

Day 208

Breakfast was coffee and semi-loathing as I drove through the snow to work (there might be copier emergencies, people)!  It was actually a lovely and easy (just slow) drive, with no one else out.  And I got a ton done today.  Total: 1 point I actually drove past the Stone House at the Battlefield in the snow.  It was very pretty. Lunch was two glasses of water, a little bit of last night's black bean soup, and half a mango.   Total: 6 points Well THIS is a creepy stock photo. Snack was a skinny vanilla latte, some of which was generously donated to my passenger seat floormat.   Total: 2 points Mmmmm, waste of $3. Dinner was filet, a baked potato with olive oil & canola spread, bacon bits, and fat free sour cream.  Also two cups of tomatoes.  Have you figured out that I have a love affair with tomatoes yet?  'Cause I do.  And then there was a boozy rice krispie treat and two glasses of water.  Total: 22 totally w...

Day 207

Breakfast was vitamins, water, coffee, and interviews.  Do not attempt this unless you are a seasoned, trained professional.   Total: 1 point This was not enough for this morning's round of interviews. No, really, sir.  Jesus did NOT tell you to tell me to hire you.  I promise. Lunch was leftover bbq on a whole wheat bun, and a salad with feta, tomatoes, and a teaspoon of olive oil.  Dessert was four tootsie rolls and a Reese's bell that bubbly blonde coworker gave me.  And three glasses of water.   Total: 9 points Snack was a glass of milk and an ounce of pistachios with a meeting agenda used as a placemat.  Classy!   Total: 4 points Wait a minute, are there unsafe pistachios? Dinner was two glasses of water, a grilled cheese with reduced fat cheese, whole grain bread and olive oil spread, black bean soup, and an indeterminate amount of whole wheat crackers.  This is why we count things, Alyssa.   Total: 15 points...

Day 206

Aaaaaaaaaaand we're back!  I told myself " self, we're gonna take a week off after the wedding and eat WHATEVER WE WANT. "  Which was fine, except that one week turned in to two weeks, then three weeks, then eight weeks.  And, non-coincidentally, eight pounds.  I know, K-Middy.  I know. So the new goal is 14 pounds to lose.  I started a few times, and did pretty well through lunch, and then there was cake, or cheese, or ice cream, or just eating raw tubs of butter. ANYWAY.  Breakfast was a glass of water, a cup of coffee, a half cup of blueberries, a cup of tomatoes with some yogurt dip, and one of these delicious sausage thingies made with Heart Smart Bisquick, skim milk, and reduced fat cheese.  Next time I'll see if I can find turkey sausage to get the calories down more.  Total: 6 points Betty Crocker is my home girl. For lunch, I made chicken cassoulet .  You'd think a dish with garlic, onion, salt, pepper, ros...

How to save money (with minimal effort)

Would you believe me if I told you that I spent a grand total of $26.10 on razors last year?  Or that that amount was for BOTH of us? My friend Kris told me how to buy razors for cheap last year at a Halloween party, and even though I was skeptical, I tried it out.  The secret is a web site called Dorco.  They make the generic versions of all of your favorite blades.  And after a year of using them, I can tell you that they work very, very, very well. Let's compare, shall we?  An 8 count of Gillette Fushion Proglide cartridges is $32.99 on Amazon , which is $4.12 per cartridge. With Dorco, you're buying in bulk, so it's a 24 pack (or rather, six 4-packs) of their Pace six blade/1 trimmer cartridges for... $29.32 .  Yep, you read that right.  That works out to $1.22 per cartridge. To answer your burning questions: 1) Y es, you do have to buy a handle ($6ish for the most expensive one), and no, the Dorco blades will not fit on your cu...

Wedding Pinterest Ideas I Actually Did!

For the uninitiated, Pinterest is a photo-sharing pinboard style web site, where you can managed different boards by type.  It's a great way to collect all of your favorite Kate Middleton pictures in one place!  Also, where else can you pin a recipe for a chocolate cake, in addition to a workout designed to help you work off the calories of the aforementioned cake? A sample Pinterest board. At any rate, I made a wedding board on Pinterest, and we actually did a lot of the things I pinned.   The big joke among pinners is that they never even attempt the ideas they pin, and when they do, the results are disastrous (but funny). Like this. And this. And this. So on to the wedding (and thanks to Virginia, Trey, Kiki, Andrea, Sam, and Amy's Chris for the pics)! First, there was the photo wall, made by my father-in-law, Ray.  This turned out to be a big hit, and Ray did an awesome job considering I sent him one picture and told him to just do ...
