Hawaii, Day 5

Before we talk about Hawaii, let's discuss how I lost 4.8 pounds last week!  Some of that was bloating from the plane, but the rest of it was hard work and eating right, peeps!  Now 15.2 pounds to go... Thank you, Kate. Okay, back to HI.  Let's finish up Day 4 with Puff, the Magic Dragon.  You know, the one that lived by the sea, and frolicked in the autumn mist in a land called Honalee.  Which you're totally spelling and pronouncing wrong, because he's frolicking in a land called Honalei, which is hah-nah-LAY, and not hah-na-LEE. At any rate, he was frolockin' in some HEAVY mist the day we went, so here's a picture of him from the internet: See his red eyes?  And his furry snout? Also in Hanalei, this gorgeous lookout, which has something you can't quite make out unless you have binoculars. And that would be...buffalo! We also saw the Kilauea Lighthouse, which is your typical "lighthouse-keeper-goes-crazy-because-of-mercury-bas

Days 229 & 230

Day 229 - Monday I started a science fair project this week called "What Happens When Working While Jetlagged?" Note to whoever did this project: the answer is yes. Note to everyone else: I am judging an actual Science Fair next week.  Really. On Monday, I was tired and clumsy and spilled a giant cup of water all over everything on my desk.  Once I got done staring at the puddle, a coworker helped me clean it up with tissues (the ones I keep around for all the crying people) and further assisted in spreading all of my soaked-yet-important documents out on the floor to dry.  Your HR Department at work. Pictured: my desk. I didn't eat anything for breakfast, because at 8 a.m., my body thought it was 2 a.m.  I did have lotsa water though!  Lunch was half of a homemade wrap (whole wheat tortilla (80), deli turkey (50), light cream cheese (30), olives (15), green chilies (10)), a quarter cup of grapes (25), a half cup of carrots (25), and two tablespoons of hum

Day 228

I bravely stepped on the scale Sunday and I now have 20 pounds to lose.  Christ on a Cracker!   I'm hoping like, 10 of those are just from being bloated from the plane ride.  That's totally realistic, right?  It couldn't have possibly been all of the hula pie, Lappert's ice cream, mai tais, kaluha pork nachos, or that morning I ate chocolate covered macademia nuts and bacon for breakfast. I feel ya, Kate.  Good luck on your 25 hour flight to New Zealand next month. Okay, so back to trying to stay under 1400 calories, as suggested by the trainer, who might actually kill me when I see her on Wednesday. Breakfast was a poached egg (80 calories), a piece of whole wheat toast (70 calories), a glass of water, and two cups of hot tea with sugar (50 calories) while trying to combat jet lag and Daylight Savings Time without using coffee, because my stomach was not feeling so hot. I think I would have done better if I would have slept on the plane, but I only got about

Hawaii, Day 4

Astute blog observers will notice that we skipped from Day 2 to Day 4.  On Day 3 we island hopped from Oahu to Kauai, hung out at the beach, and ate dinner. So anyway, this was our first full day on Kaua'i, which is our new favorite of the Hawaiian Islands (sorry, Oahu and Maui).  The day began with Eggs Benedict and a view of the Pacific, like all days should. These might have been the best Eggs Benedict I have ever had.  YUM. This is the view from our balcony.  Some mornings you could see whales spouting!  I took this at sunrise when you guys were having a terrible snow storm, because Amy and I played the "take a picture out your front door" game.  (Don't tell her, but I think I won.) Then it was off to the Hindu monastery.  First we stopped by Ganesh. I understand the fruits and leis.  I'm a little confused about the water. Next, we saw the Kadavul temple and pool, which is modeled after a traditional Sri Lankan Siva temple.  I didn't take m
